The article detailed the process of accepting the movie.

Since November last year, Lin Zhiling went to Beijing to meet with John Woo for the first time and at that first meeting, almost on the spot John Woo has decided to use her as the female lead for the movie. However, there are a lot of female stars fighting over the role and he had to go through all of them first. Last summer, before the horse riding accident, John Woo's partner , Jiang Jia Zhun went to Taiwan to talk to Lin for 40 minutes and thereafter, she has become the character in the movie in his mind.

When the horseriding accident took place, John Woo and Jiang both sent their well wishes to her and John Woo also related that he once had a similar accident and broke his leg but he assured her that it will heal. Amidst encouragement, Lin replied via her manager, "When I recover, I will definitely do my best in Battle of the Red Cliff."

Last October when the doctor said that she was almost fully recovered, she immediately set off to Beijing. In order not to be spotted she had thought of voing via Korea but in the end, still went through HK.

She arrived for a screen test and they made her a period costume and gave her a few pages of script. After the test, at dinner time, John Woo praised her. He said that she would do well but he would nevertheless put her on acting classes just prior.

On the web there was a lot of discussions immediately after the announcement. In one day, there were 24 pages of replies (7700 posts) and 80% of them are against her because she has a child's voice and they thought she was too old.

In the movie, Lin was to play the wife of Chow Yun Fat. John Woo chose her because she is stylish with an air of classic beauty which goes well with the role of her being the most beautiful woman at that period of tiem.

John Woo also likes to use new faces for every movie he makes and to choose people who have similar quality as the character they play. Even though the character's details are not many in the original works, John Woo envisions that Lin's role is a character who has opinions of her own and is against war. She cares about the world at large and is a bridge between beauty and intelligence.

John Woo has observed Lin's charity work in real life and her character closely matches that of the role in the movie. He added that the year he chose Chow Yun Fat to play Mark in A Better Tomorrow was because Chow in real life appears to be a person of integrity, often lend money to others and work for orphans. And sure enough, Mark became the most human of all bad guys.

John Woo is confident that Lin could do well to bridge the gap of her modern beauty with classic beauty in this movie. Besides, he joked that he likes to work with people taller than him.

In the meantime, Lin will stop all her hosting programs and concentrate on acting classes which could be held in Beijing or Los Angeles. John Woo also need to perfect her accent.
