Majority of Taiwanese feel lonely, blame dull life: poll

TAIPEI (AFP) - An overwhelming 88 percent of Taiwanese people feel lonely, a poll released to coincide with
Valentine's Day revealed, with many finding solace in the internet or television.

People gave many reasons for their loneliness, including a monotonous lifestyle, lack of fulfillment at work and disappointing romantic relationships, the survey by Career monthly magazine found.

Nearly half of the 1,734 people surveyed over 10 days in January were single, and among the unattached, 61 percent said they felt particularly lonely on Valentine's Day.

Of the Taiwanese who admitted to being generally lonely, the majority blamed their "dull, routine life", the survey said, while only a small percentage said lack of friends made them feel alone.

To cope with their loneliness, most people watched television or films, chatted on the internet, or listened to music, Career magazine said.

Heart-throb Taiwanese-born actor Takeshi Kaneshiro topped the list of dream men whom women wanted to spend Valentine's Day with, while men opted for the island's famous model Lin Chi-ling.
