Battle of Red Cliff originally was to be filmed for the duration of 3 to 4 months but now that John Woo has decided to extend the movie into a two part movie for the Asian market (one 2.5 hour only for the American market), the filming would be extended to 6 months. Tony's management company, Jettone, was said to have raised the fees from US$1,500,000 to US$3,000,000.

However, the film company said that it has nothing to do with the fees but that Tony did not have the time for extended commitment due to other schedules. However, they did not specify what work scheduled would clash. (I think it's the American film he was to be the main star in the script of which is written by Lawrence Block specifically for him.)

It was also said that Tony has been quite tired after filming Lust, Caution in Shanghai with Ang Lee and didn't think he could sustain that level of energy especially working with Chow Yun Fat.

The newspaper in the meantime speculated that Tony had to look after his home affairs with the recent rumor of his long time girlfriend being seen with a rich businessman. It was known that Tony always go to the Thai monk in Thailand for fortune telling every year with a group of Hong Kong artists but the Thai monk refused to see Carina Lau all these years and this year, Tony did not go to Thailand for fortune telling.

The film company said."Tony's decline is a pity but it has nothing to with pay. Six months is really a long time and Tony has a lot of other things scheduled. They regretted not being able to work together because John Woo really admire Tony as an actor."

Takeshi's manager confirmed that as soon as Chi Ma finishes shooting, Takeshi would go to Beijing for the start of the new film. Ms Yau said that two years ago, Takeshi has been approached on this movie but he had other work planned and so couldn't agree at that time. It is reported that Takeshi has asked for US$1,000,000 and the film company regarded it as reasonable and they are grateful that Takeshi is willing to step in last minute. Takeshi is said to have two other films coming and he might have to do some rearrangement on those.
