While Tony could handle the Mandarin in Lust Caution, he saw the script for the Battle of Red Cliff is full of ancient texts and so decided not to saddle the production with his slow progress in getting up to speed in this respect.
John Woo believes that Takeshi would do well for the role because he is fluent in Mandarin and has that quality.
According to the production crew, Zhu Ge Liang in the movie started out unnoticeable and Guan Yu and Zhang Fei doubt his ability. When he went to JiangDong to seek aid for Suan Quan, no one paid attention to him. But once he put his words to action, he wowed those around him. Takeshi and Tony both have this inner quality in them that is not obvious to the eye especially Takeshi who is younger in age to do this role. It will attract the younger female fans and John Woo is confident that Takeshi would be a good choice for the role.
