Too busy for Red Cliff

It wasn't for love or money. Tony Leung Chiu Wai pulled out of director John Woo’s Chinese epic Red Cliff not because he had problems with the pay or that he wanted to spend more time with girlfriend Carina Lau.

He just felt he had no time to prepare for the role of master strategist Zhuge Liang, Leung said at the Asian Film Awards recently.

He had wrapped up spy thriller Lust, Caution and crime drama Confession of Pain back to back, when he found that with Red Cliff being split into two instalments, he would have more lines to learn – in Mandarin.

Does he think his last-minute replacement, Takeshi Kaneshiro, will have time to do his homework for the shoot that starts in Beijing late this month?

“I believe Takeshi Kaneshiro’s Mandarin is better than mine. In this aspect, it is easier for him,” Leung said of the Taiwan-born actor.

Red Cliff, also starring Chow Yun Fatt and Chiling Lin, will be released as a two-part epic in Asia but as a single movie internationally.

The romance between Leung, 44, and Lau, 41, has reportedly been rocked by 56-year-old tycoon Terry Gou’s announcement of his interest in the actress.

But despite tabloid talk that Leung was breaking up with Lau and moving to his mother’s home, he was seen returning to his love nest with Lau last week.

He has stayed silent on the love triangle, but had said he would work with any movie investor, even Gou, as long as the script was right. – The Straits Times Singapore / Asia News Network
