The chatter and noise of 10,000 people expecting a feast of stars and songs at the Pop TV arena in West Kowloon came to a sudden silence at 2.28pm yesterday the exact time of the deadly May 12 Sichuan earthquake.

After the one-minute silence, it was nothing but songs from 400 Hong Kong, mainland and Taiwan mega-stars and singers.

Though spectators paid a gate price of HK$20, donations at the last count climbed to HK$35 million through phone pledges and text messages.

The line-up included action hero Jackie Chan Kong-sang and Cantopop icons Andy Lau Tak-wah, Jacky Cheung Hok-yau, Leon Lai Ming, Eason Chan Yik-shun and Sammi Cheng Sau-man.

Also on stage were Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou, model Lin Chi-ling and actress Shu Qi.

Representing the mainland were actors Zhou Xun and Hu Jun and singer Zhang Liangying.

"I believe if we work hard, we can overcome any disaster,"said Jackie Chan, who visited earthquake survivors at a temporary primary school in Dujiangyan on Saturday.

Chief Secretary for Administration Henry Tang Ying-yen and Li Gang, deputy director of the Central Government Liaison Office in Hong Kong, also went on stage to appeal for donations.
