BEAUTY, brains and a soaring career - Taiwanese actress Lin Chiling seems to have it all

The 34-year-old who has a double degree in economics and Western art history from University of Toronto has steadily worked her way up to become a sought-after supermodel, TV host and now, actress.

Yet, she admits wisdom sometimes eludes her when it comes to love.

In a phone interview from Hong Kong to promote her new film Red Cliff II, she told The New Paper: 'I am usually very disciplined and logical.

'But when it comes to love, I can be silly at times.

'I don't think anyone can deal with matters of the heart in a completely logical fashion. I believe this is true for most people.'

Despite that little peek into her personal life, she remains tight-lipped about her romances.

When quizzed about her rumoured relationship with millionaire businessman Qiu Shikai, she coyly admitted to it but did not elaborate.

In a recent Hong Kong interview, she confessed to having two other relationships in the past.

She met her first boyfriend, a Taiwanese, at university when she was 19. They broke up seven years later.

She was also romantically involved with Taiwanese interior designer James Su, 40.

According to entertainment website QQ.com, they were together for four years.

Chiling was also said to have dated Taiwanese actor Jerry Yan, 32, for three years. Both celebrities never confirmed the rumour but they reportedly split in 2006.

One thing is for sure, Chiling regards relationships dearly and will not tolerate dishonesty.

She said: 'I won't say I have been betrayed. The word is too strong. But I don't like being deceived and lied to.

Saddened by deception

'I will not be angry if it happens. But I will be very saddened to the point of heartache.

'A couple must be true to each other. Without sincerity and honesty, a relationship will be rocky.'

Red Cliff II, now showing in local cinemas, is the sequel to last year's Red Cliff.

Directed by John Woo, the movie centres on the momentous Battle of Chibi in ancient China.

Chiling plays actor Tony Leung's wife, Xiao Qiao, who is known for her beauty.

Incidentally, the former supermodel is widely dubbed as the No1 beauty by the Taiwanese media.

Chiling was voted Hong Kong's Sexiest Asian Model in 2006 and got the netizens' nod for Asia's most beautiful pair of legs in 2007. At 1.74m tall, she is said to have legs that measure 1.13m.

But she says she will give up her career for love.

Family over career

She said: 'If I feel that my career is impeding my relationships and family life, I will sacrifice it for stability.'

Is that a hint that wedding bells will be ringing soon?

After all, she once revealed in an interview with news website Sina.com that she wanted to get married before turning 35.

Perhaps she can also put the tea-brewing skills picked up during the filming of Red Cliff to good use.

In the movie, Xiao Qiao supposedly brews tea skilfully.

Chiling joked: 'I think it's the media who is more eager to attend my tea ceremony (a Chinese wedding tradition) than my family.'

She was rumoured to be engaged after she appeared at an awards ceremony with a diamond ring last November, reported Taiwanese newspaper Liberty Times.

But she denied that her nuptials would happen, adding: 'When the time comes, I'll definitely share it.'

When it happens, she dreams of an intimate wedding with a garden setting instead of a grand affair where one is unable to attend to every guest.

Just like co-star Tony and actress Carina Lau's heavily-guarded nuptials in Bhutan last July which she refers to as 'the most romantic wedding ever'.

She said: 'It'd preferably take place under the sun because it feels more blissful, as if I have additional blessings from the sun.'
